The Casa de Cultura Mario Quintina, a hub of Brazilian cultural life, is housed in the former Hotel Majestic, an extravagant pink building dating from the 1930s. It is named after a famous gaucho poet who translated Proust. A fine symbol of the city's cultural dynamism, it contains two cinemas, two theatres, an art gallery, library and centre for stage arts.
