A Rococo gem, the stunning "Golden Chapel" (1697) evokes the golden age of the religious orders in Pernambuco. Inside, its decor reveals a breathtaking array of golden sculptures, arabesques and finely cabled balustrades. On the walls and ceiling of the nave, 17 paintings framed by talhas douradas (gilded woodwork) depict the saints of the order. The chapel is part of a complex that also encompasses the Convento de Santo Antônio and Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco. Azulejos run all around the cloister of the convent.
