Explore the beauty of this bay and its surrounding areas with a knowledgeable guide.
Guanabara Bay was discovered on January 21, 1502, by a Portuguese squad commanded by Andre Goncalves. Thinking it to be a great river—and being the month of January—they gave it the name Rio de Janeiro.
The largest bay in the world by volume, Guanabara Bay contains several islands—including Governor's Island, Fundão, and Snakes Island. Rio de Janeiro is visible to the west of the bay, while the municipal district of Niteroi is to the east. Explore the local areas of Botafogo, Flamengo, Urca, Sugar Loaf, Fort Sao Joao, Flagstone Island, the Santa Cruz Fortress, the Rio-Nieroi Bridge, and much more!
