Though initially settled by Germans, the buildings and charming streets of Petropolis mark the“Imperial City” as a true Brazilian city. Stops along the way include the Imperial Museum and the Crystal Palace.
Known as the “Imperial City” since the time of Emperor Pedro II in the mid-1800s, Petropolis has managed to retain its Brazilian history and flavor. After the 37-mile (60-km) drive from Rio, your first stop in this amazing town is the Imperial Museum—the summer residence of the Emperor D. Pedro II. On view is the crown of gold, as well as pearls and diamonds used by D. Pedro I and D. Pedro II.
Continue to the Gothic Cathedral where Princess Isabel was buried. You can also view the tombstones of D. Pedro II and his wife. After the cathedral, you'll visit the Crystal Palace—designed and built in France, then assembled in Brazil and now home to numerous exhibits.
