Ipanema and Leblon are two chic and fashionable districts located in the south of Rio next to the ocean. Ipanema's beach, which rivals Copacabana's, was at its most popular in the 1960s, when bossa nova arrived on the scene. It's a bustling place so use the Posto, which serve as meeting points for Cariocas, to get your bearings. A little further to the west is Leblon beach, which is a lot less busy. Beware of the currents and waves, which can be dangerous.
