Centro, the oldest neighbourhood in Rio, is where the vestiges of the city's past are concentrated. Whether it be the imperial palace and the Baroque churches of Praça XV or the theatre and museums of Cinelândia, there is no shortage of culture. The past, however, is closely connected to the present, with the area's urban bustle and construction of modern tower blocks (especially in Largo da Carioca, the business district). The district's perfect blend of modernity and history makes for a distinctive atmosphere.
