The National Museum of Fine Art has 16 000 works, making it one of the largest collections in the country. Here you can contemplate works by Brazil's great 19C masters (for instance, Victor Mereilles, Rodolfo Amoedo, Pedro Américo), as well as Italian Baroque paintings by Eugène Boudin. Contemporary artists are also represented; the engravings by Carlos Oswald are especially worth seeing. The temporary exhibitions held here are always of interest. The only downside is that the rooms are sometimes closed to visitors.
