A journey on the Bonde (pronounced "bonji"), the tram that runs between Centro and Santa Teresa, is an unforgettable experience. The carriage has completely open sides, allowing you to better appreciate the landscape. Street children and Cariocas who are in a hurry (or broke) jump on the tram as it passes and travel for free on the step: it's quite a ride, especially when the tram goes over the aqueduct (an experience best left to the Cariocas). When the Bonde first started running in 1874 it was pulled by animals; it started running on electricity in 1891.
