The Museu de Arte da Bahia is housed in a 19C villa that still bears the name of one of its former owners, Cerqueira de Lima, who made his fortune from the slave trade. For a time Governors Palace, it was substantially reworked in 1925. The collections boast many works by the artists of the Bahia school of painting (1764-1850), founded by José Joaquim da Rocha. The museum also owns a series of 200 drawings by the Argentinian artist Carybé.
