The Cidade Alta, or Upper Town, is the historical centre of Salvador. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, and its steep cobbled streets, churches, museums and colourful colonial houses have been completely renovated; there is a strong police presence in the area. However, the improvements have meant that the inhabitants of yesteryear were asked to move elsewhere… To get there, opt for the Elevador Lacerda (the roads leading there are not very safe).
