It would be a mistake to miss this historical city that boasts beautiful examples of Baroque and colonial architecture. São João del Rei prides itself on having given Brazil two immensely popular personalities: Tiradentes, hero of the Inconfidência movement, and Tancredo Neves, transitory president, who died in 1985. Unlike neighbouring Tiradentes, it managed to avoid a decline when the mines closed by investing in agriculture, livestock-rearing and trade. Elected Brazilian Capital of Culture in 2007, it has several orchestras, a lively cultural scene and decent nightlife.
