Site of a long and bloody battle that was decisive for Bulgarian liberation, the town has numerous monuments commemorating this key chapter, but certainly does not live in the past. Its fresh and animated centre is a pleasant place to stroll, with several museums worth a visit including the Museum of History, and the Svetlin Rusev Art Gallery located in the former Turkish baths.
