At the junction of the roads leading to three former Bulgarian capitals, (Pliska, Veliki Preslav et Veliko Tarnovo), Sumen is at the centre of one of Bulgaria’s largest Muslim communities, as attested to by the Tombul mosque. A modern, charmless town, it has nevertheless managed to preserve some of its traditional houses, and is a convenient base from which to visit the former capitals and the Madara Horseman.
