In the middle of the Thracian plain, Stara Zagora is a town of shaded avenues and gardens. On the road between Plovdiv and the Black Sea, the pleasant atmosphere of this old Roman settlement merits a stop. A stroll through the centre reveals its municipal gardens and a pedestrian precinct named after Tsar Simeon the Great. Also worthy of note are the 15C Eski-Dzamija mosque, and the Nikola-Manev Gallery (1867), a fine example of “Plovdiv Baroque”.
