Carewec, the Bulgarian tsars' citadel Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Carewec, "City of the Tsars", towers above the town of which it is the soul and heart. It has retained the memory of the saga which made the Asen dynasty (1218-1393) one of the most brilliant in Europe. At first sight, Carewec appears like a wooded hill surrounded by an impressive defensive system and crowned by the tower of the patriarchal church of the Resurrection. It is accessible via a narrow rocky isthmus. Even though only a few buildings remain, discovering the citadel, whatever the season but mainly in spring, offers a delightful experience.
