The church of St-Demetrios-of-Salonica, designed in the Byzantine style, is surrounded by a fine flower-decked enclosure. It is here that the brothers Theodore and Asen rose against Byzantine domination and laid the foundations of a future state: the second Bulgarian Empire (1186). Tsars Pierre, Ivan Asen and Kalojan were crowned here. Remodelled several times, this single-nave church, in the shape of a Latin cross, is typical of the style of the Turnovo school (alternating stone and brick work and exterior decoration featuring glazed-ceramic friezes).
