Documents
European Union nationals: passport, valid six months after the date of return if arriving overland from Serbia. Holders of some types of British passports (notably British overseas citizens) require a visa (consult the Bulgarian Embassy site above).
Important: if you intend to stay in a private home, you must register your stay at the local police station; otherwise you risk a heavy fine (up to €1000).
Health

No vaccinations are necessary. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will provide access to medical care at a reduced cost or free of charge. The simplest and quickest way to obtain your EHIC is to apply online (UK citizens https://www.ehic.org.uk/InternetRes/home.do or http://www.ehic.ie/ for Irish citizens). It is however advisable to take out some form of additional private insurance. This is particularly the case if you intend to rent a car, because the rental agreements do not include insurance for passengers or drivers. Some credit cards do however cover these shortcomings.
Ticks are quite widespread and can carry serious diseases such as encephalitis. If intending to spend time in rural areas, it is a good idea to get vaccinated at least one month prior to your departure.
