The climax of any visit to the monastery of Rila, the principal church on this site (universally revered among Bulgarians) is a breathtaking architectural and decorative ensemble. Pause in the outer narthex to admire the wall paintings by Dimitar Zograf embellishing the gallery. Inside the impressive wall paintings comprise more than 1 200 scenes executed with a tonal freedom characteristic of the National Revival style.
