Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Bell's favourite shape, the tetrahedron, is used extensively in the design of this fascinating museum. Exhibits illustrate the genius of this remarkable man. A number of films and videos are shown during peak season. In 1885 Bell first visited Baddeck, where he was to conduct much of his aeronautical work. Eventually he chose the location for his summer residence. The site houses models of the telephone, Bell's original vacuum jacket (a forerunner of the iron lung), a surgical probe (a device used prior to the invention of the X ray) and his kites. His project to prevent stranded sailors from dying of thirst at sea is on view-a model for producing drinking water from breath and saltwater. A highlight is the superb photograph collection, oversize black-and-white prints of Bell's life and work. One wing of the museum is devoted to his hydrofoil, the HD-4. Both the original hull and a reconstruction of the entire craft are on exhibit. From the museum's rooftop garden, there is a view of the wooded headland across Baddeck Bay. Beinn Bhreagh ( not open to the public), Bell's Canadian estate, can be seen among the trees.
