The prehistoric park re-creates western Canada as it might have looked in the age of the dinosaurs between 225 million and 65 million years ago. Life-size reproductions of these giant creatures stand among mountains, volcanoes, hoodoos and swampland, along with the vegetation that might have existed in their day. The Canadian Wilds section, adjacent to the park, admirably reproduces the taiga (boreal forest), muskeg, tundra, aspen parkland and Rocky Mountain habitats of western Canada and is populated with moose, bears, beavers, sheep, goats, deer and other natural denizens. The zoo is particularly distinguished by its work in breeding endangered whooping cranes and Vancouver Island marmots.
