As visitors approach Drumheller, crossing a fertile, wheat-growing plain dotted by bobbing “donkey head” oil pumpjacks, the townsite comes as surprise. Nearly 120m/400ft deep and 1.6km/1mi wide, the extensively eroded valley in which the town sits is the very image of desolation.
