Opposite the Beaverbrook Art Gallery stands the stately Georgian seat of provincial government, with its classical dome and double-columned portico. Constructed of sandstone in 1880, this building replaced the old Province Hall, which was destroyed by fire. Visitors are permitted to see the assembly chamber with its tiered balcony and to view portraits of Queen Charlotte and King George III, replicas of paintings by Joshua Reynolds. The parliamentary library is reached by a striking wooden spiral staircase.
