Canadian Museum of Civilization
Canadian Museum of Civilization
: Michelin's recommendations
Inaugurated in 1989, this sizable museum is dedicated to the history of Canada as well as to the art and traditions of its native cultures and ethnic groups. The sweeping curves of the two large buildings designed by Douglas Cardinal evoke the emergence of the North American continent and its subsequent molding by wind, water and glaciers. The Canadian Shield Wing houses administrative offices and conservation laboratories. In the grand hall six cultural regions of the Canadian Pacific Coast are illustrated through the wooden homes of village chieftains and majestic totem poles rising to the ceiling. In the Canada Hall artifacts and reconstructed buildings re-create 1,000 years of Canadian heritage. The delightful children's museum encourages young people to explore the world, from a Mexican village to a Pakistani street. A costume room, puppet theatre, games section and art studio complete the exhibit.
