The city of Hamilton lies at the extreme western end of Lake Ontario. It has a fine landlocked harbour bounded on the lakeside by a sandbar. A canal has been cut through the bar to enable ships of the seaway to reach port with their loads of iron ore for Hamilton’s huge steel mills, which have given the city its title of Steel City. The sandbar is crossed by the Skyway Bridge, part of the Queen Elizabeth Way, which connects Toronto with Niagara Falls. Hamilton is set on the Niagara Escarpment, which swings around the end of Lake Ontario at this point.
