Hamilton’s former water-pumping station, completed in 1859, now provides a rare example of 19C steam technology. Architecturally interesting with its arches and cast-iron Doric columns, the engine house contains two Gartshore steam-powered beam engines in full working order. The once pumped as much as 5 million gallons of water a day, until replaced in 1910. The boiler house has displays on the use of steam power and a working model of the beam engines.
