This somewhat exotic Italian-styled villa contrasts sharply with Kingston's more traditional stone buildings. When completed (c.1840), it caused quite a sensation and, for a short time (1848 to 1849), served as the residence of Canada's first prime minister. A Scot by birth, Sir John A. Macdonald (1815-91) spent much of his youth in Kingston, and opened his first law office in the city in 1835. The house is furnished to reflect Macdonald's time of residence.
