This large island just to the north of Montreal was first named Ile Jésus by Jesuit priests in the 17C. A parish was established in 1702 and the fertile land was quickly settled. In the 20C, bridges and highways transformed the pastoral island into an industrial and residential suburb of Montreal. The island was renamed Laval in 1965 when its various municipalities merged; today it is the most populous city in Quebec province after Montreal.
