Montreal Museum of Archaeology and History Recommended Recommended : Michelin's recommendations

Opened in 1992, this museum complex brings alive the fascinating history of Montreal from its very beginnings here at Callière Point. In the contemporary Éperon Building (don't forget to climb the tower for a great view of the modern city), visitors can view a wonderfully absorbing multimedia presentation on the evolution of Montreal. Temporary exhibits are mounted on the second floor, and from the third floor belevedere, a lovely view extends over the Old Port Esplanade. An underground passage leads from the Éperon Building to the archaeological crypt directly beneath Place Royale, where visitors can see the actual vestiges of early Montreal, foundations and even walls of uncovered structures. Scale city models illustrate Montreal's appearance during various periods. The underground passage terminates at the Old Customs House (1838, John Ostell). Above ground, the edifice's Neoclassical façade dominates the Place Royale. Across Place d'Youville you'll find the old Youville pumping station, today containing an interpretation center.
