Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal : Michelin's recommendations
Rising to the west of the Place des Arts, this imposing edifice houses Canada's only institution devoted exclusively to contemporary art. Spacious, well-lit galleries display works selected from the permanent collection of more than 5,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs and large-scale in-stallations. More than 60 percent of the pieces are by Quebec artists, enabling the museum to showcase major trends in Quebec contemporary art with the work of Paul-Émile Borduas, Jean-Paul Riopelle, Guido Molinari, Claude Tousignant, Alfred Pellan, Ulysses Comtois and Armand Vaillancourt. International contemporary artists are also represented in the collection. A sculpture garden is accessible from the second floor; from here extends a view of the Place des Arts. Situated in the public space between by the Place des Arts complex and the Contemporary Art Museum is the Fifth Gallery (Cinquième Salle), a multipurpose theatre space that can be reconfigured according to the requirements of the piece being presented.
