Montreal's premier cultural complex for the visual and performing arts consists of three structures bordering a central square. The imposing concert hall (1963) is flanked by a theatre building (1967) and the city's contemporary art museum (1992). The buildings are situated around a vast esplanade where lively crowds gather during fine weather. Several annual festivals and events take place here, among them the International Jazz Festival, held in the area near the intersection of Rues Jeanne-Mance and Sainte-Catherine.
