Saint-Louis Square
: Michelin's recommendations
Named for Emmanuel and Jean-Baptiste Saint-Louis, two eminent local businessmen, this picturesque, tree-shaded square is surrounded by lovely Victorian structures distinguished by their whimsical rooflines and gables. The district became a select neighbourhood during the late 19C, when the Francophone bourgeoisie began moving to the area, attracted by its tranquil atmosphere. Long popular with Quebec artists and poets (Louis Fréchette, Émile Nelligan and, more recently, Gaston Miron lived here), the square was the centre of the nationalist movement during the 1970s. Although the fleur-de-lis is still in evidence, today the square is more likely to resound with American folk songs than with separatist chants. It is still considered a Francophone bastion for Quebec writers, musicians, filmmakers and actors.
