Founded in 1969, this university (known as UQAM) is housed in a series of contemporary brick buildings integrated with older structures. One of these occupies the former site of Église Saint-Jacques (St. James Church), designed in the Gothic Revival style by John Ostell in 1852. All that remain of the church today are the façade of the south transept facing Rue Sainte-Catherine and the bell tower on Rue Saint-Denis. This spire, which was added to the church about 1880, is the tallest in Montreal at 98m/321ft. With an ever-increasing enrollment of over 40,000 students, the institution is undergoing major expansion, and now occupies some of the buildings that formerly housed the polytechnical institute. A second campus between Place des Arts and Rue Sherbrooke houses an enormous complex for the study of the sciences.
