About halfway along its course from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario, the Niagara River suddenly plunges over an immense cliff, creating one of the world’s great natural wonders. Niagara Falls themselves straddle the US-Canada border. The American Falls on the US side of the river 300m/1,000ft wide and more than 50m/160ft high. Although many cataracts in the world are higher than Niagara, the terrific water flow and the relatively accessible location have drawn visitors for centuries.
