On both sides of Green Island, the Rideau River drops over a sheer cliff into the Ottawa River. The intensity of the flow depends on the time of year. The falls are best viewed in the spring, or in winter when they are frozen. To see the second set of falls, visitors can cross the first set by a bridge. There are good views of the Ottawa River and Gatineau.
