Stretching 671m/2,200ft above the majestic river, this popular vantage point offers breathtaking views of the Lower Town, St. Lawrence River and sur-rounding region. The terrace, a large wooden boardwalk, is an extension of Lord Dufferin's beautification project. It was constructed to provide a view of the river at a time when the Lower Town was overrun by commercial buildings and warehouses. The section of the terrace that faces Château Frontenac lies over the remains of the colonial governor's residence, the Château Saint-Louis, destroyed by fire in 1834. Governor Durham had a terrace built over the site. It bore his name until the present terrace was built. Dufferin Terrace rapidly became a focal point of city life. It was electrified in 1885 and, shortly thereafter, ice slides were set up. The terrace's kiosks and public benches introduced Quebecers to urban fixtures akin to those found on Parisian boulevards and created a lively, bustling atmosphere.
