Bibendum
This narrow stretch of land dominated by Upper Town was the site of Champlain's "Habitation." The first settlers arrived here in the late 17C and established shops and residences around the fort and the market square, now known as Place Royale. As commerce, shipbuilding and port activities increased, residents filled in parts of the shores, constructed numerous wharves and created new streets. By the 19C the area of Lower Town, the city's commercial centre, had doubled in size. As port activities declined in the 1860s, the neighbourhood lost its appeal and fell into decay. In 1970 the Quebec government began restoring the area. Today restaurants, cafes and boutiques abound in the historic quarter of Place Royale. Lined with shops and art galleries, the pedestrian Rue du Petit-Champlain reflects the quarter's 18C appearance.

    Pros

Claude Bureau
