Church of St. John the Baptist
Church of St. John the Baptist
: Michelin's recommendations
The slender spires and curved roof contribute to the charm of this edifice (1779). The ornate interior features works by Médard and Jean-Julien Bourgault. The main altar tabernacle (1740), attributed to Pierre-Noël Levasseur, stands in the sanctuary, decorated between 1794 and 1798 by Jean Baillairgé and his son, Florent. The barrel vault is composed of small coffers embellished with 4,300 carved flowers to simulate the heavens. The seigneurial pew has been preserved in honour of Philippe Aubert de Gaspé, last seigneur of Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, who is buried in the crypt of the church. In 1987, seventeen local wood carvers pooled their skills to create a magnificent nativity scene (crèche de Noël). Although each linden figurine was carved by a different artist, the overall effect is remarkably harmonious.
