: Michelin's recommendations
A series of archaeological sites on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River forms the basis of this testament to the survival of the Plains Indians. Translated from Cree as "seeking peace of mind," Wanuskewin was a meeting place and hunting ground for these nomadic Indians for more than 6,000 years until their removal to reserves in the 1870s. Opened in 1992, a striking visitor centre features displays and demonstrations of native culture and allows observation of archaeological excavations and laboratory work. A special treat is a performance by the Wanuskewin Dance Troupe, founded in 1997 and featuring award-winning dancers who specialize in both traditional and contemporary styles.
