The building contains an apron, or thrust stage, surrounded by audience seating on three sides. This modern development of the Elizabethan stage used in Shakespeare's day was revolutionary in the 1950s (but much copied since) because no elaborate scenery could be used and no member of the audience was more than 20m/65ft from the stage.
