Fort William Historical Park
: Michelin's recommendations
Located on the Kaministikwia River, part of the trade route to the northwest, the fort of the great rendezvous has been superbly reconstructed. From the visitor centre, visitors can walk through the woods to the palisaded fort, which is almost a town. Inside the palisade there is a large square of dovetailed log buildings, two of which are raised above the ground on stilts (the river still floods). Some 42 structures represent all aspects of early-19C fur-trade society. Costumed guides help re-create fort life. The North West Company partners can be seen discussing business in the council house; the warehouses are full of furs and trading goods; and birchbark canoes, tinware and barrels are being crafted by hand. Other highlights include a farm, apothecary, Indian encampments, living quarters and a jail.
