: Michelin's recommendations
An architectural gem designed by Raymond Moriyama, this massive brick and glass building contains Canada's most extensive public library. The five-storey structure, completed for $30 million in 1977, contains nearly 1.5 million volumes. Rising from a wide, light-filled centre, the tiered balconies are bordered by solid undulating balustrades. Special baffles in the ceiling reduce sound to a minimum. The gallery on the main floor regularly showcases materials, often rare, from the library's collections. In a cozy corner on the fifth floor is a tiny room brimming with the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection-famed Sherlock Holmes stories, Sherlockian criticism, Doyle's autobiography, historical novels, poetry and other writings. Worn Victorian furnishings complement mementos of the great detective's presence, felt chiefly through his pipes, a slipper and the inevitable deerstalker on the hat rack.
