Opened in 1927, the 2,800-seat hall was once the largest theatre in Canada. Interior arches, columns and moldings of travertine, marble, stone and plaster are designed in Spanish Baroque style by architect Marcus Priteca. Converted to a movie theatre, it was scheduled to be divided up until community pressure spurred the city to buy it, and renovate it for use by the symphony, in the mid-1970s. Today it is once again a glittering performance palace with few equals. The original pipe organ still plays in half a dozen symphony concerts each year.
