This 2,800-seat theatre boasts a 70ft-wide proscenium arch stage. Vancouver Opera Company offers four or five productions a year here that range from standards-Mozart, Puccini, Verdi-to original productions that tend to the avant-garde. People still talk about a notorious production of Strauss' Salome, in the mid-1990s, that was directed by Canadian filmmaker Atom Egoyan. Ballet British Columbia also struts their stuff at the "Queen-E," as it's called. The 1959 theatre is currently planning a redesign to improve its acoustics and sight lines.
