Built by Robert Dunsmuir, this former centre of Victoria's society (one Dunsmuir son became premier of the province and later lieutenant-governor) once stood amid 11ha/27 acres of gardens. The house has been gradually restored to its 1880s grandeur. Note the wood-panelled hall and massive oak staircase. On sunny days, dozens of stained-glass windows create rainbows of light. A large dance hall is found on the fourth floor, and from the top of the tower (accessible from dance hall) there is a good view of Victoria.
