Toronto Zoo
Toronto Zoo
: Michelin's recommendations
Opened in 1974, this world-class zoological park features a remarkable variety of wildlife on 287ha/710 acres of tableland and forest. The 5,000 animals are divided into six "zoogeographic" regions: Africa, Australasia, Eurasia, the Americas, Indo-Malaya and Canada. Among the 550 species represented are numerous endangered or rare animals such as the Siberian tiger, the snow leopard, the Malayan tapir, the pygmy hippopotamus and the Indian rhinoceros. Designed by Raymond Moriyama, harmoniously integrated glass and wood pavilions provide shelter for animals unadapted to Canada's climate. The popular Africa Pavilion, abundant with tropical vegetation and exotic birds, is home to lowland gorillas and other primates. The newest exhibit is the Gorilla Rainforest. Nearby resides Canada's largest herd of African elephants. The smaller Indo-Malayan and the Americas pavilions should not be overlooked. The Edge of Night exhibit (in the Australasia Pavilion) provides a journey into a nocturnal world inhabited by seldom-seen species like the Tasmanian devil. Rides and special activities for kids are available.
