Cañete, in the traditional lands occupied by the Mapuche, is home to an interesting Museo Mapuche which highlights the culture of this determined people who halted the progression of the Spanish beyond the Río Biobío. In 1553, Lautaro, a Mapuche leader, killed the conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, the founder of both Santiago and Concepción.
