One of the largest craters in the world (1.5km wide, 300m deep) spits its fumaroles out into the heart of the Parque Nacional Volcán Poás. From the terrace, you can enjoy a sensational view of the volcano safely out of harm's way: the Poás erupts every 40 years and it last erupted in 1989.
