This fortress, built in 1462, was enlarged in the following century to resist the Turks who had invaded neighbouring Bosnia. Note the road which stretches out beyond the second bridge; it runs alongside old lazarets, a series of long rooms where travellers were made to stay during the quarantine period that was enforced through fear of epidemics. The eye is then drawn to the ridge that borders the hinterland.
