This stunning town in a natural amphitheatre at the foot of a fortress has its back to the sea, protected from invasions by a high hill. The streets descend the terraced mountain slopes in wide flights of worn steps. The overall scene is incredibly charming despite some ruined houses inhabited by fig trees and grass snakes. An unusual feature here is the widespread presence of huge kitchen chimneys which were once considered as status symbols by their owners.
