Lastovo, the furthest island from the mainland along with Vis, is also one of the smallest, measuring just 11km by 5km. Like Vis, it was home to a military base and was off-limits to tourists until 1989. According to tradition it has 46 islands, 46 churches and 46 farming valleys. With barely 700 inhabitants and overlooked by tourism, it has few beaches, although its creeks and spectacular are perfect for divers and hikers.
